Video clip showing proper form for the french press exercise for triceps. This is a great exercise you can do at home with just an inexpensive barbell set. If you want big arms, remember that the triceps is actually a bigger muscle than the biceps so dont neglect it!

As with any dumbbell exercise, form is key if you want to maximize your muscle building efforts and minimize the chance of injury. Don’t use too much weight, if you can’t do the exercise slowly then you need to go lighter. Count aloud “one onethousand, two onethousand, three onethousand” on the way up and the way down, if you cant do this on this exercise then you are using too much weight. The reason this exercise method maximizes your muscle growth is because it confines the motion to the muscle you are trying to work out, if your body squirms, swings, and kicks, all you are doing is taking the focus away from the muscle you are trying to exercise.

Anyone can be healthier, have more energy, sleep better, and feel better about themselves through bodybuilding. Bodybuilding doesn’t have to be expensive or take a lot of time, gyms are great but home workouts can save you time and money. A cheap dumbbell set from a garage sale or walmart is all it takes to get started with your home workouts.

  1. Very helpful, I tried the exercise today. Could you tell me something about bicep building-if I want to train for size is it better to do 1-2 rep sets with a weight I can barely do and have to cheat on, or do full 10 rep sets of a smaller weight? thanks heaps

  2. Even after 23 years of bodybuilding, I'm still learning. You say that my form is "incorrect", on what are you basing this? Are you a physical therapist or orthopedic surgeon? What is the scientific reason this is "incorrect"? I've been using this exercise for two decades with good results and no injuries, am I missing something?

  3. IMHO "Muscle & Fitness" magazine rates only slightly above the National Enquirer in their scientific credentials and responsible journalism. Again, I am interested in learning here. Are there any scientific studies or research that documents that your way is "correct" and my way is "wrong"?

  4. If this method of exercising triceps is "wrong", I will remove this video immediately. Is there a physical therapist or orthopedic surgeon out there who can shed some light on this or provide some references? Personally I have been using this for two decades with good results and no injuries, am I missing something????

  5. What do you mean by "wrong". Do you mean that this method of doing the exercise is ineffective or do you mean that it is dangerous? If the former, I'm not too worried as I have 19" arms and my triceps development is proportional to the rest of by physique. If it is the latter, it is possible I have just been lucky but I've been doing this for over two decades without injury. Please explain.

  6. nice. I have 17 inch arms and I'm seventeen. been lifting for a while. with the french press I always have trouble keeping my elbows from not shaking. maybe i go to heavy hehe. I think i got most of my mass from pushdowns though but you need a cable for that.

  7. ur missing nothing. its a good exercise, fuck the haters. however, have u seen Arnold perform this? He states how the french press may be better b/c after the weight is pressed up, it's on an angle, so there is constant tension on the muscle, it's not resting while your elbow is in the locked position.

  8. I tried this a couple of days ago instead of french curls & dips & it totally hit the spot! im still a bit sore, does this exercise target a different area of the triceps in comparison to say….. tricep dips?
